1. Where does coconut oil come from ?

Coconut oil, or copra oil, is an edible oil extracted from the kernel or meat of mature coconuts harvested from the coconut palm. It has various applications. Because of its high saturated fat content, it is slow to oxidize and, thus, resistant to rancidification, lasting up to six months at 24 °C without spoiling. Wikipedia

Long ignored because of its saturated fat content, it is now popular for the same reasons.

Coconut oil is extracted from the flesh of pressed coconuts to extract the oil.

Coconut comes from the fruit tree which produces approximately 50 to 150 coconuts per year.

It obviously grows in tropical countries where it is widely consumed locally and imported into the West.

Mainly from India, Indonesia and the Philippines. Even if we obviously find a lot of it in Africa where it is consumed on the spot.

2. The different forms of coconut oil

In a solid state below 20 degrees, it must be heated in a bain-marie if you want to use it as a care product on the skin and hair.

3. What does coconut oil contain?

Coconut oil contains a lot of saturated fat and it is for this reason that it has even been considered dangerous for the body due to cardiovascular risks.

There are indeed two types of fat :

4. What are the health benefits?

Used internally or externally, coconut oil has many qualities for health: a moisturizing and nourishing product for the skin and hair, it also has medical uses since it calms itching and burning and some other skin problems.

5. How to use coconut oil ?

In cooking in special recipes or as an internal or external care product, coconut oil can be used in different ways which makes this oil a multipurpose product that can replace many others. And it is a natural product.

In the kitchen

As a replacement for butter

You can even make a sandwich with a paste made from coconut oil, grated coconut and caster sugar.

As cooking oil

Vegetable oil, fragrant or not, is used in cooking to replace other vegetable oils, in particular in sweet dishes such as cakes, but also in sweet and savory Asian dishes.

As internal care products

Containing a lot of nutrients and vitamins, coconut oil closes saturated fats containing triglycerides which are very well assimilated by the body and which do not clog the arteries.

As external care products

Coconut oil is a very nourishing oil that deeply hydrates and softens.

It also has restorative virtues which calm the skin overheated by redness or the sun.

Used as a natural cosmetic product it is used to hydrate the skin of the body and the face and the hair.

Just take the equivalent of a teaspoon and wash your mouth for a few minutes, rinsing your teeth with it.

It is the practice of the oil pulling which allows to whiten the teeth and to clean the mouth in depth by getting rid of bacteria.

It is also known to soothe and relax the muscles contracted after an effort or to calm muscle congestion.

6. Where can I find coconut oil ?

The use of coconut oil is very widespread today, so much so that it can be found almost everywhere, from the pharmacy to the organic store and even the supermarket!

Depending on the region where you are, it will be interesting to look for the most local product, that is, one that is closest to home.

If you live in Asia or Africa, it will indeed be more interesting to buy it on local markets where producers come to sell their products.

You can also make it yourself if needed.

You can get about 100 ml of oil with 4 coconuts.

It is enough to recover the coconut flesh, to mix it, to let stand a few days before recovering the oil which will be separated from the water.

7. How to choose your coconut oil ?

  • Virgin
  • 1st cold pressing
  • Unrefined
  • Non hydrogen

Essential product to have in the kitchen and the bathroom.
